Calder At The Museum

Usually Calder reacts poorly to time spent in non-child focused museums. Tantrums, crying, whining, and general disregard for the rules of decorum are among the many joys experienced when one brings Calder to a museum. This past Friday, however, Calder chose not to make other museum-goers cringe, cover their ears, and head the other way. Instead, Calder was particularly moved by the "Family Fun Night" musical performance at the Columbia Museum of Art. So moved that he decided to take his shirt off mid-performance. My attempts to get the shirt back on only prompted him to strip once again before chomping on a cigarette-like pretzel.

He's a character, that Calder Weinberg.

I Want Two Mommies

Driving home from swim class this morning, we passed some construction workers in the middle of the road.

Milo: Mommy, I want to do that.
Me: You want what?
Milo: I want to be a fixer worker.
Me: You want to be a construction worker when you grow up?
Milo: Yes. Maybe though I can be a construction worker and a doctor and a daddy all at the same time. I could do that if I have a mommy who stays home and takes care of the baby and all the other stuff.
Me: Really.
Milo: Yes. Mommy can you do that for me?
Me: What?
Milo: Can you stay at home and take care of my baby for me?
Me: No, Milo. That's not how it works. I'd be your baby's grandmother and someone else would be the baby's mommy. You'll have to find a nice girl to do that.
Milo: Okay, maybe we can stop and knock on the door of a house and find a nice girl.
Me: We could, but don't you already know some nice girls?
Milo: Yes. Maybe Hallie [one of the girls in Milo's preschool class] could do that for me.
Me: Sure. But what about Hannah [Milo's best friend from Virginia]?
Milo: Hannah! I could have two mommies for my baby.
Me: No, that's not how it usually works. I don't think Hannah would like that.
Milo: I'll check with her. I want two mommies.

Hmmm. I'm not sure if staying home and passing up my six figure salary in order to care for my boys is setting such a good example for them.

Swim Class

Milo's begun taking swim class this month. He seems to enjoy it quite a bit, though he still refuses to put his face in the water or blow bubbles. Milo's favorite part of class is when Coach Katie lets him doggy paddle "by himself," complete with a little "puppy nose" strapped to his forehead.
